Short Column Design Spreadsheet

A column can be said as the short column or long column depending on its length to width ratio. If the length is more than 12 times with it is a long column.The Structural difference between them is that. The short column usually fails due to crushing while long fails due to buckling. This is a Short Column Design Spreadsheet so it deals with the design of short columns only.

This Short Column Design Spreadsheet is created in  a very easy to understand manner, providing the reference for the relations and formulas used. So, I tried to create this spreadsheet which can be used to design and mainly to understand the column designing, but it is only limited to short, square, axially loaded columns only. Maybe, in upcoming days I will do some more work on it and make it usable for more diverse situations.

Version 1.0 of Short Column Design Spreadsheet

I have started my work with making spreadsheets for designing the column. Till now it contains two sheets that are quite capable of designing short rectangular and circular column under axial load only. I have saved and created this files in .ods (ODF Spreadsheet) format as it was in LibreOffice Calc.

After creating this file, I even created saved it in .xls format. Things were working fine there too.

Here are the shots of what I have created.

  2. Max()
  3. Min()
  4. >=
  5. Roundup, RoundDown
  6. pi()
  7. “text Here” & CellNo. & “text Here”
  8. and off course, above-mentioned formulas are used in a loop, for creating a function.
